The Land Rover Lightweight, also known as the Half-Ton (1/2 Ton), was designed by Land Rover to meet the demands of the British military for a lightweight, easily removable off-road vehicle capable of being transported in the first time by Westland Wessex helicopter. Obviously, changing the chassis and transmission of an 88-inch IIA to lighten it was not easy. The only thing that could be changed without altering the qualities of solidity was the bodywork. Naturally, Solihull was started by getting rid of all that was not needed such as the spare wheel, the doors, the side panels, the fender flares etc ... Finally the minimum weight of the Lightweight reached 1206 kg Heliportable by the Wessex also lightened by 72 kg for this occasion. Subsequently this helicopter received a more powerful engine to lift heavier vehicles than the Lightweight.
